The short answer
Reinstallation can repair a damaged computer-side installation, but it cannot fix an unreachable printer or a hardware error. Verify the original failure first and preserve your working setup.
Where this applies
For Windows 11 and macOS printer support on a personally managed computer. Shared, managed and server-based queues should be handled under the organization's instructions.
Identify the right device and prepare
Record exact model, OS version, current queue name, USB or network connection, installed package, custom defaults and any scanning features. Obtain a supported installer from official manufacturer support before removing anything.
Work through the checks in order
After replacing a computer, the old printer queue may still reference a former network address. Reinstalling the same driver without correcting the connection will recreate the original failure.
- Run a simple print test and check device readiness and connection; note the exact failure so you can compare afterward.
- Follow the manufacturer's package instructions for reinstall or repair. If those require removing the affected printer queue first, confirm it is the correct queue, not a shared or unrelated printer.
- Re-add the printer in Windows Printers & scanners or macOS Printers & Scanners as directed; select the supported driver or available built-in print method.
- Restore only the needed preferences and print the same test page. Separately check scanning if it was part of the affected package.
Expected result and next branch
A fresh queue for the correct physical device accepts and prints a test job. Record the installed package and any preferences you restored.
If installation fails, save the error text and confirm OS compatibility, account permissions and remaining connection issues. If the model is no longer supported, discuss supported alternatives with the manufacturer.
Safety and limits
Do not delete every printer or clear shared jobs. Avoid removing general USB, network or operating-system components as a printer reinstall shortcut.
