Check controls before packages
On a Windows 11 laptop, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad using the keyboard or an external mouse. Confirm that the touchpad is enabled. A laptop may also have a model-specific function key that toggles it, and settings may change whether it operates while a mouse is connected. Consult the manual before using an unfamiliar key combination.
A touchpad that moves the pointer but cannot scroll is a different fault from a touchpad that never appears in Windows. Note which gestures fail and whether it began after an update, wake or physical impact.
Test detection safely
Connect a known-working USB mouse if available, so you retain pointer access. Restart once and observe whether the touchpad works at the sign-in screen. In Device Manager check Mice and other pointing devices and Human Interface Devices for relevant entries and warning status. A generic device name may require comparison with the exact laptop model's support documentation.
Microsoft's touchpad guidance includes updating or reinstalling drivers after initial checks. Before any reinstall, obtain a correct maker or Windows package and confirm your external input works. A missing device or a malfunctioning controller should not be treated as proof that a random touchpad package will help.
- Enable the touchpad and check documented toggles.
- Compare behavior with and without an external mouse.
- Inspect device status; record any recent version change.
- Select an official exact-model package only if evidence points to device support.
If nothing changes
If the touchpad comes back after enabling a toggle, no driver replacement was needed. If Windows reports a fault after a specific update, check whether Properties > Driver offers Roll Back Driver, subject to administrator rights and the availability of the prior version. If the laptop fails to detect the touchpad in manufacturer diagnostics too, contact official support.
Do not remove working keyboard or controller entries while diagnosing a pointer problem. A liquid spill, swollen case or physical click mechanism failure merits service rather than further software changes.
A useful retest separates three motions: moving the pointer, clicking, and scrolling with a gesture. If movement returns after changing a setting but click does not, examine the touchpad's click settings and physical feel before installing software. If the pointer works at the sign-in screen but not after a particular account loads, compare per-user settings and accessibility options. A device that fails in the manufacturer's pre-Windows diagnostic environment is not a Windows touchpad-driver case; collect the result for support.
