Special keys are not ordinary typing
When letters and numbers type correctly but screen brightness or airplane-mode keys do nothing, replacing the standard keyboard driver may be irrelevant. Function-key behavior can depend on an Fn mode, platform service or laptop-specific utility. The exact mapping belongs to the manufacturer's model documentation, not to a universal Windows key chart.
Windows 11 may still allow brightness or volume adjustment through Settings while the shortcut fails. Test that alternate control to determine whether the underlying feature itself works.
Locate the failed layer
Note the exact key combination and whether its behavior changed after reinstalling Windows or updating a maker utility. Check the manual for Fn-lock or action-key settings; key combinations vary and should not be guessed. Test a second special key such as volume, if present, and compare its result with the equivalent Windows control.
Identify the exact laptop model and OS version, then look for manufacturer descriptions such as hotkeys, system control or platform utility. A utility's installation may require another model-specific package; follow the documented prerequisites. Device Manager's keyboard entry can be healthy even when the supporting application is missing.

When the key itself may be damaged

Avoid changing firmware settings or installing unrelated platform packages without the maker's specific instructions. If the device is managed, ask its administrator before adding utilities.
For example, the sound level can be adjusted in Windows but the volume function key has stopped responding since reinstalling the OS. That observation says the sound device and output work; compare Fn mode and the maker's listed hotkey utility. If Windows cannot adjust the sound either, the problem is wider than the key and belongs in audio troubleshooting. If only one physical key never registers, compare it in a supported pre-boot diagnostic or ask the maker for a hardware test. Each result changes the next action.
