The short answer

A print job can be received correctly yet use the wrong page geometry. Match the document, application print settings, queue defaults and paper physically loaded before blaming the driver.

Where this applies

Works across Windows and macOS applications, although dialog names differ. Specialty media, borderless printing and finishing depend on the exact printer model and paper path.

Identify the right device and prepare

Keep a non-sensitive sample document and record its intended page size, orientation, margins and paper type. Check the tray's actual stock and the printer display's tray-size setting.

Work through the checks in order

An A4 document sent to a queue set for Letter can be scaled or clipped at the bottom. Changing the paper size in just the application may not resolve a tray that still advertises Letter.

  1. Compare the document's page setup with the print dialog: for example Letter versus A4, portrait versus landscape, and scaling or fit-to-page.
  2. Check which tray is selected and what size and media it physically contains; correct the tray settings using the printer's own instructions.
  3. Run a single-page test with ordinary supported paper and conservative defaults, then change one setting at a time.
  4. If a feature such as duplex or borderless is absent, compare the printer's documented capabilities and the configured print queue or supported package.

Expected result and next branch

The printer accepts the chosen tray and produces a correctly oriented, uncropped test sheet. Keep the successful combination for future documents.

If plain text prints correctly but one application still clips, inspect that application's page setup or exported document. If every document is wrong, inspect queue defaults and model capabilities.

Safety and limits

Do not force unsupported media into a tray or repeatedly retry a jammed printer. Mechanical feeding problems require the model's paper-handling instructions.

Questions readers ask

Is clipping always caused by an old driver?

No. A mismatch between document size, scaling, printer settings and loaded paper is often enough to explain it.
