The short answer
When a USB printer is missing, first determine whether the computer detects the physical USB connection. No driver can make a disconnected or failed cable transmit data.
Where this applies
Direct USB printers on Windows 11 and macOS. This is different from a network printer whose USB connector is reserved for service, and from a queue that exists but cannot print.
Identify the right device and prepare
Have a known-working data cable and another direct port if available. Check the exact model manual for connection order. Record whether the printer displays an error and whether it works from another computer.
Work through the checks in order
A charge-only cable can power a small peripheral but carry no print data. Swapping to a known data cable is more informative than repeatedly installing different packages.
- Power on the printer and clear paper or cover errors; reseat both ends of the proper USB data cable.
- Try a different direct USB port and a known-working cable individually; bypass the hub or dock for this comparison.
- Open the OS printer list and look for a new entry. If none appears, check whether the computer detects any connected USB hardware; on Windows Device Manager may show a device error.
- If the device is detected but no printer queue exists, add it using the operating-system printer settings and the manufacturer's supported model instructions.
Expected result and next branch
One of the changes makes the device detectable, or you have narrowed the failure to a cable, port, printer USB interface or computer USB path.
If another computer also cannot detect the printer using a known-good cable, ask the manufacturer about hardware service. If detection works but output fails, inspect its queue and printer status.
Safety and limits
Do not remove USB controller drivers or other essential devices to troubleshoot one printer. On managed computers, printer installation may need administrator approval.
