Plan while the connection works

If Wi-Fi is your laptop's only network path, changing its driver without preparation can leave you unable to fetch a replacement. On Windows 11, first write down exact laptop model, OS architecture, wireless adapter name and currently working driver version. This page covers preparation and recovery decisions, not a generic download utility.

Choose a trusted source: the maker's support page for this exact model and component, or Windows Update's offered package. A package intended for another wireless-chip variant is not a useful backup even if its filename says Wi-Fi.

Build a small recovery kit

Save the applicable official installer and any instructions locally and, if practical, on trusted removable media. Note whether its installation requires internet, administrator access or prerequisites. Keep a supported alternative such as wired Ethernet, permitted phone tethering or access to another computer. Do not assume a dock provides Ethernet unless it has already worked with this laptop.

Record how to reach Device Manager from the Start context menu with available input. If a changed driver immediately breaks connectivity, Device Manager > adapter Properties > Driver may offer Roll Back Driver when Windows retains the old version; this option can be disabled if none is retained. Make the recovery plan before the update, not after the connection disappears.

  1. Document laptop model, adapter identity, system type and working version.
  2. Save the matching package and instructions from an official source.
  3. Confirm an alternate connection or another trusted device.
  4. Know whether rollback is available, but do not rely on it.

After an offline failure

Restart if the official installer requires it, then inspect whether the adapter is recognized and whether Wi-Fi is enabled. If the new version caused a reproducible regression, use an available documented rollback or reinstall the previously verified supported package. If the adapter is absent, repeated installers may not solve a detection problem.

Expected result is a recognized adapter and the ability to reconnect to a trusted network. If recovery requires permissions you do not have, or the adapter remains absent in manufacturer diagnostics, stop and contact official support.

Store the saved package with a descriptive filename and an accompanying note of its official product page, target component and Windows architecture; otherwise several similar installers are hard to distinguish offline. A phone hotspot is not always allowed on a work laptop and can incur data charges, so check policy and availability before relying on it. Also verify the alternative path while the laptop still works: a cable or dock that has never been tested should not be the only step in a recovery plan.

Questions readers ask

Can I keep just the link to the download?

A link does not help when the only connection is lost; retain a compatible local copy where permitted.

Is rollback guaranteed after a driver update?

No. Windows only offers it when a previous version is retained and the action is available for that device.
