Direct answer and scope
A screen's preferred resolution and refresh rate must be supported by the entire signal path. Windows display settings show the modes currently available; the monitor's advertised maximum alone is not a guarantee for every connection.
These checks use Windows 11 Settings > System > Display. They apply to connected monitors, not to an inaccessible blank desktop.
What to identify first
Identify the affected monitor in a multiple-screen setup, its selected input, the PC port, any adapter or dock, and the cable type. Know a previously usable mode.
A high-refresh monitor runs at a lower rate through a basic adapter but offers its intended rate when connected directly through its supported port.
How to interpret the evidence
Resolution counts image pixels, while refresh rate describes how often the displayed image can update. They interact with signal bandwidth, so the highest advertised value for one may not be simultaneously available with the highest advertised value for the other. An adapter's specifications can also differ for one monitor versus two active outputs. Consult the combined configuration, not a single headline figure.
Windows also exposes scaling, which changes the apparent size of text and interface elements without changing the panel's physical pixels. A blurry app may be affected by scaling, the app's own rendering, or a non-native resolution. First select the correct display, then test the recommended resolution and a supported refresh choice. If the screen is unstable, revert to the previously usable mode before investigating further.
If the picture disappears immediately after selecting a mode, allow Windows' timed confirmation to revert when offered rather than repeatedly committing an unreadable choice. A display that can show 4K at one refresh rate may not support the same resolution at every rate or through every adapter. When comparing paths, hold the resolution constant and vary one other condition.
- In Display settings, select the correct numbered screen, confirm extend/duplicate arrangement, and choose the recommended resolution if available.
- Open Advanced display for that screen and inspect its current and available refresh rates.
- If the desired mode is absent, compare the monitor, output port, cable, adapter, and dock makers' documented capabilities.
- Try a suitable direct connection or known-good rated cable, then recheck mode availability before touching the GPU package.
Expected result and alternate outcomes
If a mode appears directly but not through a dock, the dock route is the first place to investigate. If available choices change with cable or port, record that evidence.
If no supported mode produces a stable image, return to the previous setting or alternate screen, then check hardware and manufacturer guidance. Scaling is separate from actual output resolution.
Caution: Do not force an undocumented timing or assume a newer driver can overcome physical transport limits.
