The short answer
Reinstall the driver for the identified device, not every audio entry. Obtain an official package that supports your exact PC or accessory and Windows version before removing anything. Reinstallation may need model-specific components that a generic Windows driver does not restore.
Secure the recovery package
On Windows 11, record your PC/accessory model, current provider and version, symptom, and output selection. Download the official supported package and its instructions while internet access is available. A USB interface may have a specific plug-in order; a laptop may require coordinated audio extensions. Save work and plan for a restart.
A reinstall must match the affected path
Suppose a USB interface no longer appears after a driver change while built-in laptop speakers still work. Reinstalling the laptop's audio codec would change an unrelated component. Confirm the interface's cable, USB connection and exact model, then follow that interface maker's supported reinstall instructions. The maker may specify when the device should be connected.
If the laptop speakers disappeared after an audio package update, the PC maker's support page is more relevant than a generic codec download. A model-specific installer may provide processing or amplifier controls as well as a driver. After installation, check that Windows has not switched output to a connected monitor before deciding the reinstall failed.
If Windows detects the hardware but installation reports unsupported hardware, pause. Record the precise error, package version and model, then check support documentation. Repeatedly removing an endpoint does not fix a mismatched installer, and broad uninstalls can also interrupt microphones or display audio used for communication.
Use the maker's reinstall route
Start by trying the official installer or Windows Update route if it supports reinstalling without removal. If Microsoft or the maker specifically recommends uninstalling an affected device, identify that exact controller in Device Manager and follow the documented sequence. Windows may install a basic driver on restart, but that does not guarantee OEM processing or jack controls.
- Confirm that the package matches the exact hardware, Windows release and architecture.
- Follow the manufacturer's reinstall instructions for the affected device only.
- Restart when requested and let device detection complete before judging the outcome.
- Re-select the expected output and input, then test a local playback sample and brief recording.
Caution: Do not delete every audio device or turn off security to make an incompatible installer run.
If the device still does not work
An installer rejecting the device suggests a model or support mismatch. A detected endpoint with no sound still needs route, cable and hardware checks. If sound only works through USB but not through built-in speakers, check the laptop maker's speaker diagnostics and support.
If the issue started after a Windows update, compare the actual driver version before and after instead of assuming the OS update replaced it. Escalate recurring detection failures to official hardware support.
