The short answer
A Bluetooth headset must be connected and selected as an audio device; being paired is not the same as playing sound. Wireless audio also depends on the PC's Bluetooth adapter. Update that adapter only when a connection or detection issue supports doing so.
Identify the two sides of the link
These Windows 11 checks concern the computer's Bluetooth adapter and a headset or speaker. Record both models. The headset can expose different playback and microphone capabilities depending on its connection mode and the application; do not assume a microphone will preserve the same music playback quality in every mode.
A headset can be paired without being the active route
Imagine a headset that appears under paired devices but is not currently connected for audio. Windows still plays through the laptop speakers. Verify connection, then deliberately select the headset's playback endpoint. If it disappears whenever another phone is nearby, check which device it is connected to rather than changing the computer's internal audio codec.
During a call, an application might select the headset microphone while music previously used a different playback mode or endpoint. If sound changes when the microphone becomes active, review the app's selected output and the headset's documented capabilities. This observation alone does not establish a defective Windows driver.
If two different Bluetooth accessories repeatedly fail to connect while a USB headset works, inspect the PC's Bluetooth adapter, its Device Manager state and official update options. If only one headset fails on several supported hosts, focus on that headset's pairing or hardware. Keep the tests separate from the analog speaker route.
Separate connection from routing
Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices for connection state, then Settings > System > Sound for output and input selection. Charge the headset, move within range and check that another device has not taken the connection. If other Bluetooth devices also fail, the PC's adapter becomes a stronger suspect than the headset's sound endpoint.
- Confirm headset charge, power and active connection to this PC.
- Choose its playback endpoint and test a local clip at low volume.
- Select its microphone separately and test a short recording if needed.
- If connection or discovery fails broadly, inspect the adapter in Device Manager and check Windows Update or PC maker support.
Caution: Do not install the PC's internal analog audio driver as a fix for Bluetooth pairing.
Choose the affected component
If a wired headset works and Bluetooth does not connect, inspect pairing, distance and adapter support. If Bluetooth connects but one app is silent, inspect its output route. If the headset also fails with another compatible device, seek headset support. Re-pairing may be appropriate after confirming the PC still has a working control and network route.
An available Bluetooth driver update is not proof that it addresses the headset. Read compatibility and restart instructions before applying one.
