What does compatibility mean?
Compatibility means that a driver package is intended to operate with a particular device and operating-system environment. It includes more than a shared manufacturer name: hardware identifiers or revisions, OS version, architecture, and sometimes computer-model-specific integration can matter.
A package can be signed and still incompatible; signing addresses identity and integrity rather than supported use. Windows matching rules compare device identifiers to package information, but an exact model support page can add constraints that are not obvious from an installer name. 'Works on Windows' should prompt the question: which version, which device functions, and under what published support conditions?
Example in context
Two laptops advertised with the same wireless technology use different physical adapters. A download for one chipset may not match the other at all. Even if a general package installs, an OEM-specific package may be needed for documented laptop features such as radio controls. Checking the exact computer model and detected adapter reduces guessing.
A common misunderstanding
Successfully running an installer does not prove compatibility with the device you care about: it may merely extract files or install a utility. A package for a different operating-system release also should not be assumed safe because its filename looks similar. Conversely, a built-in system driver might supply adequate basic support without a new download.
How to use this term
Compatibility also has a functional side. A basic class driver might permit printing but not expose scanning controls; a monitor might display an image but not offer its highest refresh rate through a particular adapter. State which feature you need, then compare the device's documentation and the whole connection path. A package matching a chip family does not erase the laptop maker's system-level support constraints.
